Tartan Stocking DIY

This is an easy way to dress up a simple stocking. I used a $1 felt stocking from Target and 3 pretty ribbons from A.C. Moore to create a tartan pattern (with no sewing involved!)

Find out how to make it after the jump...

Materials:
1 felt stocking
3 different ribbons
scissors and nail clippers
pencil
ruler
fabric glue or duck tape

1. Use a pencil and a ruler to draw out the squares that you will string your ribbon through. These could be different sizes depending on the ribbon that you chose. I made mine 1 x 1 inch squares with 3/4 of an inch between each row and column.

2. Cut out the squares. I used finger nail clippers to create a slit in the middle of each square and then used scissors to cut out and around the square from there.

3. Cut pieces of ribbon to the desired length and string it through the squares by going over one ribbon and under the next, as shown above. For the horizontal ribbons you can either cut them long enough to tie them in a bow on the back of the stocking or you can tape or glue them to the back of the stocking. For the vertical ribbons tape or glue the ends to the inside of the stocking once you have them arranged as you would like them.

We wait until Christmas Eve to hang our stockings but I know many people hang up stockings a few weeks before Christmas. I kind of like that idea- they do look so pretty hanging on the mantle! When do you hang your stockings?
